Piratemania 2010

Yesterday we went to our first big event since being introduced to Geocaching a few weeks ago. What I say is, why wasn’t this sort of thing around when my kids were little?? Technology is to blame of course, too slow to get going!

What a fantastic day we had and what a great way for families to get themselves out and about and keep the kids amused for very little cost. It was great to see the kids enjoying themselves and one little lad in particular was really funny. As we left the site to begin the Pieces of 8 walk, a family were sat on the bridge logging the first cache “Blackbeard”. The eldest of the 2 was standing guard halfway back along the bridge and the youngest shouted “don’t look, we aren’t doing anything” We stopped in our tracks obligingly but he kept assuring us that they weren’t doing anything and telling us not to look. Very funny and well taught by the parents!

We were late getting there on the day, not arriving until around 12.30. We set off straight away to log some local caches and had only gone about a mile or so when we stopped to talk to a couple of people changing their gps batteries and quickly found out about the Piratemania stash. One of the couple (never thought to ask their names) kindly provided us with a spare route map and so we cached our way along the smaller of the figure of 8 loop, back to the campsite, collected our rucksack and supplies and set out at 3.30pm to complete the rest of the course.

We completed the whole thing by 8.30pm and finished off the day with a meal at the village pub “The Shoulder Of Mutton”. The food there is excellent, the staff very, very helpful and pleasant and I would highly recommend the place to anyone.

After dinner we walked back to site via the road to get one last cache in – Unhinged – which is at the site entrance.

All in all, a brilliant day out with a final total of 29 caches logged and some 13 or 14 miles walked.

Now that’s Geocaching at it’s best – so far!
